"1000 A.D. VIKING
MAN"
In 1000 A.D., The Vikings
(also known as the Northmen)
of Scandinavia were at their
fiercest height. They had
conquered most of Europe,
traveling up and down the
rivers. But they were not
only fighters, but then
became traders in everything
from slaves to merchandise
and arms.
Summers, Viking men and
their graceful ships went “a
Viking”, as they called it.
They began traveling outside
of their Scandinavia
countries, first to
Friesland in Holland, then
on to the British Isles.
They were so fierce that an
old Anglican hymn had a
line: “From the fury of the
Northmen, O Lord, deliver
us”. Then they began to move
down the European rivers,
conquering and trading. They
would come home before
winter with their booty.
This Viking man has a jerkin
made of wool strips, finger
woven for warmth and
prestige. He wears his
jewelry proudly, some made
by his own hand and some
“borrowed” on his travels.
His pants, like his wife’s
apron fabric, are more
subdued, but definitely not
a sissy fabric.
Artist’s Note: His pants
have the yellow and blue
stars which are a “color and
weave” structure, but with a
darker weft. The dark blue
background, painted with
acrylics on canvas,
represents the vast skies of
northern Europe, and the
tiny beads are the many
stars with the Milky Way
being the navigation back to
his homeland.
