"Winter on the
Northwest Coast"
The
ancient peoples of our
American and Canadian west
coasts lived mainly on the
waterways and on the ocean
shores. This was because the
forests were so dense and
thick that even skilled
hunters were often unable to
penetrate, even when winter
covered the evergreens.
My painted trees look
bare, however, to illustrate
the cold. The costume, with
its shell beads, is actually
pearl cottons, woven in a
shadow weave structure of
red and black. Those are
often the colors used by the
Northwest tribes. The
designs are rather
geometric, too.
